When do I reach out again post final interview?
Hey guys,
Just need some advice on my current situation. I recently went through a final round interview(5+hour interview with lunch included) with a shop where the MD straight up told me it was essentially going to be between me and another candidate. He also noted that they were going to mover swiftly for the decision process. I performed very well in my interview and feel its mine.. I reached out the same day of my interview and thanked all who I interviewed with.
It will be two weeks tomorrow since I had the interview, I was wondering when I reach out to the HR recruiter (who has been my POC since the beginning) just to be caught up to date with the process? Or should I let it be and be patient and wait for her to reach out.
I am just anxious about the whole situation. I started the process in February and am still in the running/ final candidate and were nearing the end of April, so you can imagine my angst. The job would be a huge blessing for me and my family, so i guess i just have a lot riding on it.
Any advice on this situation would be helpful, thank you in advance!
Two weeks is fair game to reach out to the recruiter assuming you have not had any other info. Read back through any e-mails you may have to be sure you aren't asking something stupid. The MD saying they are moving swiftly versus the HR contact are very different realities.
Reach out. They are clearly interested in you and it's been two weeks.
Definitely fair to reach out. I would've reached out to the HR POC a week ago. Best of luck bud.
If its been two full weeks that might be a bad sign... nonetheless, I'd check-in to get an update or move on.
I reached out to the recruiter yesterday and she has yet to get back to me, which is odd because through the whole process she was very quick to get back to me. Thoughts on this? Should I email the MD directly for an update? Thanks guys.
She is probably following up with hiring manager before answering you. There's no point of her telling you no update before she even tries to get an update. A lot of people are busy and forget to submit their reports to HR without being reminded a few times. Give it another day or two.
Thanks guggroth,
Appreciate the advice. I am a young buck (graduating UG in 2 weeks) so all of this is very new to me. I will just wait to hear back. At the very least I would expect a formal no before I lose hope. I was literally the first guy they interviewed for the job and even though I didn't have my second interview until 6 weeks later(due to them interviewing others), the MD said I was the strongest candidate out of the bunch, and it would be between me and someone else. Hoping for the best, i will keep you updated!
Did not get the job, just got the rejection email. It's a bummer.. but going to move on and be resilient. As my father taught me "nothing in life worth having comes easy" Thank you all for the advice.
Sorry to hear that. Good luck on your new endeavors. Did they say something about why you get rejected?
It was a 50/50 shot between me and another guy. They chewed on it for a while, and ended up taking the other guy.
Followup after interview (Originally Posted: 10/14/2015)
I interviewed for a position roughly a week and a half ago (two weekends have past since then). I heard no feedback all of last week, so I called the recruiter and left a voicemail for an update. Unfortunately, I missed the return call which came at the end of last week, the recruiter left a voicemail stating I was being called for an update about the position but didn't leave any specifics. I would think that if I was no longer being considered I would have simply been told in the voicemail or not contacted at all. I called back first thing yesterday but haven't yet heard back.
Just curious about take on this (good/bad sign or impossible to tell?). This would be my first full time position, so I'm completely not used to the hiring timeline "norms". Any insight much appreciated.
Considering you called and left a voicemail, I would say that the HR person returning your call and leaving a voicemail is in no way positive or negative with regards to your chances. HR will not give offer or rejection info over voicemail.
Typically, you will hear back within a couple days if you get the offer and having 1.5 weeks pass means either waitlist or rejection. However, if this is a more unstructured process it may take longer.
I wouldn't worry about it or look into it too much.
In case anyone stumbles upon this post in the future with a similar question...
I was finally able to get ahold of the recruiter today. They moved on with other candidates.
Best Practices for Post Interview Follow Up - Chime in! (Originally Posted: 02/20/2018)
I trust this post finds everybody well,
With hiring season comes interview season and the same questions arise every year.
1. Do you have to follow up with your interviewers after an interview by form of email thank you letter?
Answer: No, you do not have to. ( However it is a great communication tool for example, if a week has gone by and you have not heard anything yet back and you are anxious. Send a follow up,)
2. I have decided I am going to send a follow up email, how long should I wait to click send?
*Answer: My sweet spot for this is 7 days. *
3. I have decided I am going to send a follow up email but I forgot to get business cards from my interviewers what should I do?
*Answer: Too late kid, you fucked up the minute getting the interviewers business card was not a priority. *
4. What should I include in my follow up email?
*Answer: Be frank, be to the point. Thank them for taking time out of their busy schedule to interview your ass, reiterate your passion for this type of work and affirm your interest in the position, let them know you would be proud to be a member of their team. That's it! Easy. *
Ideally you rock your interview so hard that you get an offer before ever needing to send a follow up. But if you feel like you need to send a follow up start with these good practices. Curious to hear everyone else's. I ask everyone to chime in and add to this discussion with your best practices for interview email thank you follow ups.
At a minimum I follow up with a thank you email. I have written thank you letters, but honestly don't think there is any benefit to sending them vs an email. The contents should be straightforward, thanks for taking the time, thanks for the opportunity to interview and thanks for informing me about the opportunity. Normally I send within 24 hours.
need to follow up after interviews? (Originally Posted: 02/07/2011)
Is there a need to call and follow up with the interviewers/HRs 1 week since the interviews (any rounds)? (I don't have their emails/ they don't reply) Thanks!
Chances are any email you send won't get read or will get skimmed and quickly forgotten. It can be a nice touch, but if you do send something, keep it quite brief and simple. The thought counts more than the wording, don't obsess for half an hour over the language.
from my experience this semester, with all the banks I have interviewed with(a shitload), if you don't hear back the night of or at least the next day, you are on hold. In other words, you are there if someone drops out of the interview and for second round interviews, you are there if someone declines the offer(which happens more than you think). So many kids get multiple offers but obviously only end up taking one. So, your chances will greatly open up when deadlines across universities come up
From my personal experience it is not necessary and it doesn't hurt you if you don't follow up.
Following up - Phone interview with a firm (Originally Posted: 04/05/2012)
I had a phone interview with a firm a week ago and was told that they were planning on bringing candidates in very soon for in-person interviews.....I have found through linkedin that the global head of recruiting is an alumni of my school and I am planning on contacting this person to follow-up (I was told by the analyst that someone more senior to him would be getting back in touch with me)....what should i include and make sure not to include in this e-mail?
anyone??
I would first email the recruiter that contacted you first or the person who you had the phone interview with first. Asking if there is anything else you can provide them with to help them with their decision process. I wouldn't make the email to complicated and I don't think you should directly ask when you will hear back. Emailing them will show you are eager already.
As for contacting the global head of recruiting, I would email them not to ask about the next steps but to get more information about the position. Explain you already had a phone interview and that you wanted to reach out to them to further talk about the experience you may gain. Being an alumni, they should be happy to talk to you.
Hopefully this helps a little bit.

I had an interview with a boutique last week. Apparently they sent out emails today that they're still in the decision process. What is the best way to keep my name on top of their head? I can think of a few: - Email saying that I have a pending offer (I do), but theirs is preferred and I would need a decision quick. - Email the VP asking for advice on a school initiative/invite him to participate. - Call and ask the VP out for a quick coffee break. - Add the VP on LinkedIn.
Senior monkeys, please advise!
If you have an offer on hand then you most definitely need to leverage that. Email/call them asap to let them know you have an offer and will need to make a decision soon.
Definitely call and let them know you have an offer on hand. You have nothing to lose anyway, being a little aggressive is fine.
Thanks guys, any other advice?
I'd just call and let them know about your outstanding offer. That should help a bit, but after that I think you need to sit tight and wait. I'd leave LinkedIn/school initiative stuff until after they make their decision, but that's just me.
Following up with interviewer- Annoying or showing initiative? (Originally Posted: 02/14/2013)
Sup guys, had a superday last Friday at a BB. Haven't heard back yet since they had to reschedule some kids for this Friday because of the blizzard that hit us. My interview went real well and I'd really like the position. The MDs replied my thank yous and seemed to genuinely like me but I'd like to stay in their minds so what I wanted to know was, would it be cool for me to reach out to them and ask for updates or would that be possibly annoying, since it hasn't even been a week yet?
thanks guys
i would wait. They are busy and they also travel.
