I wouldn't say there is a specific one. Depends entirely on the quality of the individual, but I'd also say that the jump from sellside S&T to buyside is harder to make every day.
Buyside traders used to have had sellside trading experience, but now that's not always the case. And as for other roles, I don't know many S&T folks who end up at HFs.
If you want to be in a credit/distressed/special situation fund, being in a high yield/distressed analyst is the best way in.
If you want to be at a quant fund - you probably want to be in an exotics group trading some quant strategy.
If you want to be at a macro fund- you want to be a rates or FX trader.
If you want to be at a long short equity fund - you probably want to be at a sec lending desk knowing where you can find some GME shares to cover your short
Which funds are doing the best and have the brightest future out of curiosity? Not a huge comp sci guy so leaning towards FICC S&T -> Distressed or HY fund but want to understand more about Macro HF industry.
Hard to say.. but Equity Hedge Funds already had a rough time prior to the recent turmoil. Quant/Comp-Sci funds seem to be doing well. Macro seems to be mixed, some doing well and others not as wel

There isn't one type of hedge fund. These videos give a good overview of the market.
