Currently I've been thinking about 1) what are main drivers of value / key metrics market is paying attention to, 2) what's markets view on those and 3) what's investment view and how does that differ from consensus.

I found the above didn't work well for some ideas where #s couldn't be quantified / scenarios where it was less #s driven

Best way is to study stock moves that have worked and see what drove the sentiment change on the way up and on the way down. Over time you develop a portfolio of patterns that hopefully help you recognize the next decel / cyclical peak / fraud / accounting shenanigans, etc.
