Best Things to Actively Do Searching For First IB Positions
As the title goes, I am curious to hear everyone's opinions on the best things to actively be doing while looking for that first IBD opportunity. I believe this could be a useful conversation to have no matter the stage of your career (undergrad, recent grad, 1 yr in looking to lateral, pre-MBA, etc). I'll list some below that have helped me / I've aggregated from alum and friends in the industry. In particular, I would love to hear opinions on modeling preparation as it pertains to getting analyst level positions.
Technicals
-Completing M&I guides
Behavioral
-"Walk me through your resume"
-Storyboard (kind of the same thing)
-Strengths / Weaknesses
-Why IB
-Why X Bank
-Why Z Group
-Tell me about a time... (having a few stories from EC/ internships to display qualities of a banker)
-Know the good qualities being looked for --> Strong Comm Skills/ Strong Analytical Skills/ Teamwork/ Leadership
Networking
-Cold Emailing --> Bunch of threads on formatting
-Reaching out to Alumni first
-Following up after no response --> 3x and then move on?
-Conduct strong informational interviews
-Try to set up coffee chats if location is not an issue
-Cold email non-alum as well
-Try to not be too generic with reaching out (although I'm 100% culprit of doing that too)
-Cold Call (Never tried but would love to hear input on this)
-Offering free labor (hasn't worked for me yet)
Modeling (???)
-WSP? Found a random course on Udemy that is like totally getting the job done (I think) and pretty thorough for only like 15 dollars. Don't think this section is make or break but maybe just highlights further interest.
Intangibles
-From trying to break in the last few months, it definitely seems that this is a game of numbers and a game of luck (those may be two in the same).
-Persistence (cliche and I myself do not believe it anymore)
Hope this can catalyze a strong and supportive conversation to help foster the success of all our peers in this community. As I mentioned before, I do think that this is relevant to everyone - independent of where you are. Many of us on this forum are still looking for our chance to prove ourselves and release that first major sigh of relief that I'm sure countless others did from signing that first offer, while many of you may have picked from 5 different offers and have since scaled the IB ladder, exited to PE, or left for something entirely different. Let us try to teach one another something new and meaningful, for the process of learning is one that can never be completed.
