How Do You Get an Off-Cycle Internship at a BB?
I was browsing through LinkedIn, looking at alumni and current students for potential schools i'll be transferring to this fall - and saw a handful of off-cycle "IBD Fall Analyst Intern" or "IBD Spring Analyst Intern" positions held.
I have heard that since BB's are so institutionalized, that it is near-impossible to get recruited off-cycle; regardless of your network. Is this just a case of a super strong connection with an MD or can you really network your way into these roles?
The roles are in DC/NYC.
A lot of these students have connections.
Some schools like Dartmouth have a J term for winter positions.
I don't know how it works in US, but I just secured my OC in a tier 1 BB and I did the assessment center for other 2 of them (tier 2) in Europe. From what I heard, they receive tons of application and often from strong profiles , and they hire literally a couple of people. Having said that, I believe you should network intensively and for long time, preferably with Associates or VPs, because they know better the recruiting needs for their team and they have stronger connections within bank itself, and they can push your Cv to other colleagues as well. Usually, when they hire OC interns is because they have a real need for help, thus they want someone that is able to offer good outputs from day 1, and a strong reference definitely helps in this case.
was it a French/German bank?
No, American
At BB this is basically impossible, except for strong connections.
But do you know how many boutiques there are in NYC who a) want free / semi-free labor and b) would feel flattered to have you chasing them down? Hustle man. Make 100 cold calls and you'll get a few hits at least.
Best way to get an off-cycle internship at BBs or boutiques? (Originally Posted: 01/08/2010)
Hi, I'm a junior at a target applying for 2010 SA. While I hope to land on a summer internship offer at BBs or some good regional boutiques, I was planning to take a semester off next fall (1) to get some solid work experience under my belt, and (2) to earn enough money to pay off my tuitions.
-First off, are there any BBs that are more known for recruiting off-cycle interns, or should I mostly focus on boutiques? -Is alumni networking really the best way to get any offer? -Should I look elsewhere i.e. UK, Europe, or Asia, where off-cycle internships are more common and well-accepted?
I can work upto 4 to 6 months from Sept 2010 to around Jan or Feb of 2011, but was wondering whether there are (realistically speaking) many positions out there in the industry. Thanks in advance.
I know some of the Euro banks/boutiques do off-cycle/long-term internships. Check those out.
Thanks Mezz. You mean the Euro-based banks in the U.S., and not the Euro banks in Europe?
And if I want to get such offer, when should I start contacting people and asking for interview? Now or after Feb?
pm me

I do not have too many required courses in my second semester at school, so I was hoping to pursue an off cycle internship at a bank. I am a sophomore in college, and I was wondering if anybody has experiences with off cycle internships. I applied to a few a couple weeks ago, but never received an email back.
Hi topjobstopcities, whoops, looks like nobody chimed in here.... maybe one of these discussions below is relevant:

Advice on Checking Job Boards/Getting Interviews for IB Off-Cycle (Originally Posted: 04/05/2011)
I'm a once-pre-med from a target school whose resume reads premed--was a candidate for top medical schools but have decided to pursue a growing interest in finance. Although I do not have any finance experience, I've been studying finance in my free time and have a high GPA with many difficult analytical classes on my transcript. I specifically want to work in healthcare banking as an advisory analyst in M&A/IPO, but am having difficulty breaking in off-cycle.
I've been networking and trying to go through Alumni Databases from my school but am looking for advice on more proactive ways of securing interviews. As I understand it, I should be cold-calling boutiques and scouring job boards. My question is, is it even worth it to look at the job boards at BB banks? Also, most boutiques don't have job boards, so is there a good job board where many boutiques might post analyst job opportunities?
The lists posted in the stickied forum topic for regional boutiques are from pre-2008, meaning many of those banks may not be in existence anymore. What's the best way to get a more updated list?
Finally, what's the best way to get contact information for recruiters?
*I realize this information is in some previous topics, but I'm interested in getting fresh perspectives. I have indeed read through many old posts but want more information.
to find postings, use indeed.com (cool mobile app too)
honestly though, networking is still going to be your best bet, especially since you have a specialized knowledge base. this is speaking from personal experience
wow indeed.com was great, thanks for the HT.
Hi, I know this is almost a year old post. But I was wondering what you ended up doing? I am also currently looking for off-cycle internships, and not sure where exactly to start.
Target schools with trimester schedules, like Dartmouth, have established recruiting programs at some banks allowing winter internships and the like. Very hard to get into without being at a school like that
