Best way to start
I am a student at a non-target state school and want to work at a HF, maybe in VC. I have a 3.6, but in just my finance classes I have a 3.9. I have good test scores but no experience working in finance at all. I graduate in May and need to start making some money. What is the best route for me to go?
What state do you live in? It's quite important---you will have better chances in state schools that are near HFs. How good are your test scores? What are you majoring in? Double major?
Best place to start is people you know.
Given what you have said I would first figure out what you want to do. Hedge Funds and Venture Capital are completely different skillsets. Second would be to network. Reach out to people and build a repore with them. This probably can be done in-step with trying to figure out what you want to do, by contacting alumni in both fields. After that just see where it takes you.
Just remember the harder you work the luckier you get.
I got a 1400 on the SAT and a 32 on the ACT, and then I got a 720 on the SAT 2 Subject tests in Math 2 and Physics. I like being able to make an investment and then see it pay off. I'm in Colorado and have been meeting people in Denver to try and network.
Oh and my degree will be a B.S. in Business Administration with a Finance concentration.
