Biases in hybrid model post COVID
Saw someone recently say that they think in-person work is important based on the "Mere Exposure Effect"
It's a bias with evolutionary roots. Our ancestors roaming the earth were much better off eating foods they were familiar with, trusting people they knew, and sleeping in places they had slept before.
Will be interesting if this bias causes people to move back to big cities over time or if it means they'll stay where they are and join local companies. Regardless, showing up in-person matters and I think we'll figure that out the hard way.
Personally, I think it's bullshit. There are also a lot of other implications here with this whole concept of "familiarity", but for in person vs remote, it has been happening a lot more than some may have realized even prior to COVID.
I don’t think comradery from familiarity (‘mere exposure’) means you have to sit next to each other 13 hours a day and smell each other’s lunch. For it to work. Couple of calls over the week will help. Plus, most of us hate our coworkers anyway.
