Big 4 Auditor looking to get into IB, Top of MSF class, CFA Level I, CPA - Any advice on breaking through?
I've been following WSO and just created an account to make this post. I started in Big 4 audit a couple years ago and have been planning my escape for.... a couple years now. During that time, I've completed my CPA, passed CFA level I and currently going part-time to a solid MSF program with a concentration in IB.
There are three type of people in Big 4 accounting: those who do not like the hours and quit, those who do not think the work is challenging and quit, and those who forget to quit. I understand that there is an auditor stereotype, which is why I have pursued the MSF and CFA. I am trying to show that I am smart enough and I did not wake up one morning and say, "I want to be an investment banker". This has been a huge time and capital investment for me.
I am looking in the Chicago area and have been thumping my graduate school network. I have talked to some recruiters and they have met my expectation of being a waste of time. The most frustrating part of the career switch is no one wants to touch me without prior transaction experience. I work in excel all day and have become pretty good at excel shortcuts. The modeling itself is 90% accounting and I have experience from the MSF program. I would like to think that I could outperform a new hire out of undergrad or someone without much work experience.
I have ruled out the BB because I don't believe they would think I'm qualified. I would think the MM or even a boutique would be a good landing spot. I've been watching career posts for WB, Baird, HL and Lincoln. I am hoping that there will be openings in early 2017 after bonuses are paid out.
Does anyone have any suggestions on breaking into the industry? Are there other steps or avenues I should pursue?
Sidenote: If anyone in undergrad is reading this and thinking about going into Big 4 audit... Don't do it unless you want your brain to turn into soup.
