Big 4 Consulting vs Asset Management
Which one should I choose? I know people will say "it all depends on what you want to do," but what if I don't know what I want to do 10 years down the line and I'm pretty sure I want to get an MBA eventually? Things I value more are best exit opps and high-quality training received on the job.
The Big 4 consulting offer is in strategy and operations- broad industry exposure and I've made good connections with the people inside the firm already, but the job might involve a lot of fluff?
The Asset Management offer is an analyst role in a solid debt/ equity shop with pretty large AUM -fairly technical, but running the risk of being pigeon-holed?
Thanks guys! Any input is appreciated.
AM is a no brainer.
The issue with big4 is that no matter the job you've done. people will still think that you are an auditor.
Yes, and no. Deloitte S&O can help place you into top MBA 2 years out - from there you can go top hedge fund/am/bank.
From a regular AM unless a top 3- u wont get to a top hf if that unless you go back to MBA anyways.
Big 4 Consulting or Asset Management??? (Originally Posted: 03/01/2013)
Hey guys, I have summer internship offers from a Big 4 firm (Human Capital consulting practice) and a top Asset Management firm (institutional sales). Which is an objectively better option and why? And which industry/firm is better in terms of business school prospects? Any thoughts are appreciated.
2 very different types of work. human capital involves working with any given organization's people and helping them adapt to organizational change whereas in institutional sales, you are selling products to institutional equity investors and structuring public offerings of securities for clients and maintaining an active secondary market.
i would go with the asset mgmt firm. the overall comp will be much better, more salary potential and youll be in a really fast past environment..however the only real downside (which is very realistic) is job security.....in finance, you have ZERO job security, relative to consulting
or business school, it depends on the firms. if you are in deloitte's human capital practice, you could be in good shape to get into a top business school. deloitte is very very good getting their people into top b schools and really do A LOT (like invite admissions to offices, help prepare for gmat, etc.) to help their folks. cant really say the same for asset mgmt firms...id doubt it too
