It looks like a range of institutions and corporates are buying Bitcoin.
Would be interested to hear what the thesis for Harvard and Yale is adding this to their portfolio? Eg is it considered its own asset class or does it fit into an existing one (such as commodities)?

Likely part of the commodities team (this is how my friend's firm views it) - they're not building out a separate team for crypto and think the trading dynamics are more in line with commodities than anything else. Not sure I agree, but think there is some element of whichever team is first to raise their hand (after the CIO is open to it).
