Worth it schools for IB
Hi, I’m A high school student interested in investment banking and thinking about where to go to college. I know about different target schools, and they all seem really awesome except that most are pretty expensive. I also heard that IB likes student athletes, and I’m a good enough runner to make some teams. My two questions are a. if it’s worth it to go to a really expensive school (NYU as an example) to then get an IB job, and b. how much should I seek continuing my running career in the search?
So you think I should just consider schools on merit, and pursue xc and track separately? Honestly, I'm just thinking about what would be cheapest to do for a target..
Also NYU is DIII, which makes you less attractive than a D1 athlete at one of the Ivies.
Idk about other banks, but my previous one (EVC/CVP/GS/MS) did not give one shit about what sport and what division you played in college..
Huh, maybe my experience doesn’t scale, but I played a sport in college at a DI level and I thought it had a huge impact for me. Our school and career center often had varsity athlete only networking events with banks and firms, but I guess that’s not the case everywhere.

Well, I haven't looked much into Ivy because of how low the accept rates are, so most of them would be reaches for me. I'm not looking (but hoping) for financial aid as most of it doesn't apply to me (my parents make around 100k combined).
My parents report around that much income, and my HYPSM school basically made me pay just like 5-8k a year (of which a good chunk was just student health insurance). Just apply to a lot of schools.
if you’re talking about ROI, I’d argue that the top public schools might be the best in terms of sticker price (if you’re in-state) vs placement.
of course, this is only accessible to kids from California, Michigan, Virginia, Texas, etc.
Well I live in VA, so UVA is an option, but I’m not good enough to run there... Still worth it?
Or even trying to get in state at a different school?
go to UVA. you won’t regret it
yes, UVA is probably your best bet if you don’t think you could get into a top target (or if money is an issue and you wouldn’t get aid from a top target)

I ran in college as a recruit for a program ranked in the top 10 academically and consistently top 40-50 for NCAA D1 running. My options were full price at D1, or full price at top D3 (like NYU, MIT, NESCAC, UChicago, etc.). Money wasn't a determining factor, but I did go with the D1 school to challenge myself on both fronts. Happy to answer any q's on the topic.
Do you think running ultimately helped you achieve your goals or at least have a good group to be with in school? I love running but i’m trying to decide if it’s worth a school choice for me...
I came into school knowing I'd never go pro, but thought I'd be better off choosing an environment that was better for my running even if slightly worse academically. Basically had 4 final choices of schools, all fairly close academically in my mind then, and chose the one that had a great team I got along well with. I probably would have been better off choosing the program that was slightly worse at running but better academically (to give you an idea, two of the three I did not choose were HYPSM), but where I went is still solid academically and the running ended up only so-so.
