Boutique IB: Gold Coast, Australia
I am aware that there are many posts/threads with regards to lists of regional boutique investment banks, however, none have a list of banks on the Gold Coast. Gold Coast, Australia is not none for its financial industry, however I will be studying abroad come next fall and would like to gain some international exposure at a boutique bank if i can.
If anyone knows of any places please let me know. A list would be greatly appreciated as well. I would be interested in anything located on the Gold Coast or within the Brisbane area.
Thanks
Google my friend.
I've used google, googlemaps, Capital IQ....no luck
Gold Coast ... you need to go down to sydney, melb or even perth. GC is a trashy holiday destination.
You're going to struggle mate. All the IBs and even the elite boutiques (Laz, Roths, Greenhill, Gresham) operate out of Sydney and to a lesser extent Melbourne. If you're talking about proper investment banking, there is nothing in Brisbane or the Gold Coast except for some working space for the Resources coverage groups of the major IBs.
If you don't mind going a bit lower, the big 4 have pretty substantial corporate finance groups in Brisbane. Smaller players like Ord Minnett, Hall Chadwick, Crowe Horwath and Wilson HTM dabble as well, but its really just advising unlisted small caps.
The competition will be fierce as well - both the University of Queensland and Queensland University of Technology have large Commerce faculties, and pretty much every finance undergrad will be scrapping for work at these places when they're not doing summer internships at IBs in Sydney and Melbourne.
My advice (such that it is) would be to change to one of the universities in Sydney or Melbourne if you want to work in finance.
Thanks for you input.
I would agree that the Gold Coast isn't the best place to go looking for a internship in finance...I was just trying to find something small while living in paradise for a few months.
Do you think it would be feasible to obtain something within advisory with a Big Four such as PwC?

KPMG looks like a no, they're not taking in international students for vac work or cadetships. You may have difficulty as there are severe restrictions on how much you can work on an international student visa (doesn't apply if you qualify for or have Australian citizenship / passport).
Unless you're in your final two years of your degree I would say forget working in finance while you study, life is too short. Get a job pouring pints at a bar near the beach and spend your free time surfing (or learning to surf) and going on trips. When you're sitting in an office at 3 in the morning as an analyst you'll look back on it as time well spent.
