Boutique Phone Interview Monday: What to look for?
Hey guys,
Long story short I have a phone interview with a boutique in NYC on Monday. They're well aware that I'm only a sophomore and although I possess a fair amount of knowledge about the markets, etc., at the end of the day I'm still a sophomore with no experience in i-banking.
That being said, what do you think are some of the best ways to prepare? I highly doubt that they'll ask me technical questions, as I wouldn't be effective in answering.
What are your thoughts?

Is this a known boutique? (prob not right? because you're a sophomore...) I'd still prepare for technicals...just in case.
Yeah it's not particularly well known. What would be a good way to go about preparing for technicals? I honestly am not sure where to start...

WSO Technical guide is pretty good...but it's very broad IMO. Doesn't get into the specifics. But, I'm sure that's fine for you, since you're only a sophomore. I feel like the M&I guide is more in-depth/advanced.

I would not worry too much about technicals. I interned at a boutique as a sophomore last year and had 4-5 interviews with various boutiques and did not encounter a single technical question. The closest I got were broad questions about the market and discussing a recent deal. As a sophomore they are going to be seeing if you are truly passionate about banking, and you can convey that by showing that you follow deals/markets very closely, not by knowing how to unlever beta.
it's better to be prepared, but honestly the most technical i would expect it to be is "how do the three financial statements link?"
get your fit questions down, know why IB, why that firm, etc.
I wouldn't brush off basic technicals. Recent phone interview I just had we went over:
If the person you originally talked to or e-mailed with didn't specify the format of the interview, it will most likely be a fit interview. I would prepare more towards behavioral than technical. Maybe more information regarding the position and the firm would give us a better idea.

I had an in-person internship interview at a mm pe/mezz fund recently and the only 'technical' question through three rounds of interviews was "In a time of inflation what's a more efficient accounting strategy - lifo or fifo?" ...
depends - the boutique i intern for now asked me about IRR/NPV, nothing about DCFs, Equity Value/Enterprise Value, etc. really depends on the company and who you interview with. But I suggest don't go overboard on studying for the technicals. Focus on the behavioral questions - and if a technical question comes up and you truly don't know it, say you don't know it. Don't pretend you do (trust me on this, I learned from personal experience)
