Today I got asked a question about ropes. The question was as follows; if you have 2 ropes and both burn in 1 hour but at a non continuous rate, how do you measure 15 minutes. You're given matches to burn them with.

Being the smart ass I am I said I'd use a stop watch.

You can't.

Okay I'll use a sundial.

It's cloudy.

I'll count the seconds it takes for one match to burn, then light the rope and keep burning the matches until 15 minutes has surpassed.

You can't count the seconds.

I'll hang myself with the rope.

Excuse me?

Nevermind. I don't know boi, what do I do?

*Tells me

Some of these are dumb because if I provide a few examples of me thinking outside the box they don't listen. I need to give the answer they wanted to hear.

No. Because it burns at a non continuous rate. The solution is to burn both sides of one rope at the same time, once it's finished 30 minutes has passed. Then proceed to let the other rope burn for 30 minutes by lighting both ends. Once that's done, you'll have 30 minutes left of rope. Now burn from both sides again and it'll finish in 15 minutes. Now you have a way to measure 15 minutes you can look for a third rope with which you can hang your interviewer for being a dick.

I had one interview at JPM or MS where the guy asked how many quarters would it be to stack to the top of the building.ย

Another question was 'how many lightbulbs are in Manhattan.'

What the fuck? The second question I got was how many pounds to get to the top of Empire State Building. It started with me having to determine it's height from a distance without having any instruments I could use. Looks like they recycle same questions
