Have you thought about venture capital? Your software engineering skills may be directly relevant for software focused VC firms.
Traditional, buyout PE funds typically look for IB and MC, to an extent, backgrounds. So unless you have connections in the industry then you may have to go B School > IB > buyout.
There may be operating partner or operational roles within buyout but not sure if that is what you are looking for.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm seeing executive programs offered by institutions like Wharton and LBS, was wondering could completion of these programs help lead to buyout?
Suppose I decide to get into IB, would firms be open to someone with an MB or graduate certificate in IB?
