Brazil World Cup!

Any WSO members out there that are football fanatics? In football I mean soccer, as in Futbol as most people in the world know it. Well anyway I love the game with a passion, and also hold a passion for traveling. So Brazil hosting the world cup (the country where futbol is a lifestyle) is an opportunity I must not let slip by. Fortunately for me, I just happen to have two Brazilian natives on my college soccer team.So I will be staying in Belo Horizonte for the world cup, at my buddies residence.

So has any of you guys ever been to Brazil? Belo Horizonte in particular? whats been your experiece? Before I get hit with a wave of judgment, let me say my intentions for this trip is first and foremost to be flooded with Brazilian culture and to participate in maybe the biggest world event for a sport I love. With that said I guess the following can be seen kind of as embracing the culture. Anyway judge as me as you wish, but coming from my friend he says you can dance with girls very easily and make out; but taking one home is like solving a rubrics cube (for those of you who can solve a rubrics cube have ruined my analogy) but point is its near impossible. My friend does say that if you have 100 dollars to spend then you can have the best night of your life, with the hottest girl you have ever seen. Of course I am skeptical about this, but my friend who does not even drink has done it, and I guess it is more accepted in Brazil... So with that said Judge me or not, If it is near impossible to get a girl in bed, I may just have to do what the locals do.

When in Rome right?

sorry new here still learning the lingo FT? But yea I am doing Brazil just because of the my particular scenario,I am definitely thinking of grad school in Europe though, and if not definitely want to take time to hit it for a couple of months. Then again I would like to travel everywhere.

As far as pros and cons for europe and brazil: I would say a big pro in europe is your ability to hit A LOT of many different countries pretty easily with easy transportation, like train available all across europe, and it can be cheap. Brazil again a pro and con I guess is the world cup. I am afraid I will not get the "true local/cultural experience due to the world cup being a huge world event, so I will be staying a week after hopefully that helps. Pro is its the fuckin world cup in Brazil to me a once in a life time opportunity, that is if your traveling this summer. You can still travel around south america and other brazilian cities I am sure but even Rio from BH is like 5-6 hour drive I think; and I am sure prices will be inflated because of the World cup.

FT = Fulltime

On another note - I'm a girl, so if I were to go to Brasil, I've been told I should go with a large group to avoid any dangers. Not sure how true this is.... :(

I wish I had the bank roll for the World Cup but unfortunately it's not in the cards. Two things on my bucket list are to go to the world cup and to go to England watch a BPL game there (In Liverpool because that's my team of choice).

This coming fall though I forget who is playing, I think Manchester United and Arsenal I think will be playing a match at the Big House in Ann Arbor,MI that I will be going to for sure. Fortunately for me, it's a half hour away from my home town so my accommodations are free and I just have to pay the plane ticket to get there.

skinay futbol fan eh? Liverpool good choice too! I visited england for soccer in middle school was promised to play some big name clubs but unfortunately got "caught up in an FA cup tourney" I think they were just trying to sell us. but played some village teams, and toured stamford bridge which was cool. I am seeing England play for sure in the world cup so hopefully I see Gerrard! Being a Charlotte Native we are getting man city vs liverpool in early august! If you can make the drive you have a place to stay if we talk more.

Heck yeah I'm a futbol fan! I've played since I was 5 and used to live soccer throughout high school. This made me a top 5 goalie in the state of Michigan, but because I came from a no name tiny crappy school, no recruiters and I never thought to ask any to come watch me so no scholarships for college soccer :(

I wish I would be able to catch the Liverpool game in Charlotte! that would be a million times better than seeing Man U but I don't think I could swing leaving my fiance twice in a month without her getting a little bit pissed off haha.

Also I'm forgetting, but didn't they cancel the Qatar F1 race this year because of all the issues they're having in that country? Or at least cancel, uncancel, cancel, uncancel again? I really feel for the players if they end up playing there because I can't imagine playing soccer in the middle of a desert. That just doesn't sound fun. Probably better than when I played soccer in Beijing though because the air quality was so bad I could barely make any sprints!

Can't make it to World Cup; ah well, there's always Qatar... in the winter.

But honestly, having spoken with friends from Europe about it, I'd much rather go to something like the Euros. Smaller countries, higher quality matches during group stages, easier to get to games/can go to a different city and watch, etc.

WC kinda sucks in places like that aren't Europe. Pretty much have to consign yourself to one city and watch whatever games happen to be there.

This is very true... unfortunately we must wait at least 12 years for maybe a european world cup. And Qatar world cup is gonna be sketchy lots of controversy going on, still they have a lot of time to make it all work.

@"pphi" Do not know much about going with a group because your a girl, sorry but I will say its probably a safe bet that your gonna want to know a local to show you round where to go, where not to. Just like any big city in the US. Being a male I am thankful I am going and staying with a local, but I am sure if you avoid sketchy areas you will be fine.

@"Skinnayyy" thats awesome Michigans got some great soccer too. Not to sure about the F1 racing I do know as far as the heat though, "supposedly" they have new technology that involves something in the works of quick freezing water... its confusing but they say in the stadiums it will be a constant 80 degrees. And ive seen videos of the future stadiums which they all look crazy and most of them are covered around the fans. Still will be hot though no doubt. Visiting Beijing that had to be an experience! and I cant believe the air quality effected you that much, never have experienced that.

Michigan has some amazing soccer that it's kind of depressing that when you're on a "good" team, that you still aren't anything against the actual GOOD teams. My friend that was on my High School team used to be able to shoot 85 MPH. (just imagine having to play goalie against something like that) And he was just an average player on his travel team. I'm just sitting there like... WTF!?!?!

Haha have you ever been to Beijing? You can SEE the pollution right in front of you

And I also heard something a few months ago about them keeping the temperature constant like that. I don't remember seeing freezing water, but who knows, I forget so much stuff that I read later that day that it's almost pointless to read it all ;)

Had planned on going for years but plans fell through. I'll will definitely be attending the next one in Russia in 2018.

If I were going, I'd most likely stay in a hostel or use a website similar to AirBnb to rent out a room and save on lodging. Honestly tickets weren't that expensive either. I think it was $600 for 3 games in the group stage. I would certainly stick to the main areas of the city and avoid traveling out because you will stick out.

In terms of the exchange rate, I've never been to Brazil. I have been to other SA countries and the exchange rate is unreal so I don't have a hard time seeing $100 making you a big time player at clubs and bars.

I've been to Brazil multiple times, most recently this summer. To address a few of your points:

1) Yes, go to a club and you'll find beautiful women everywhere. The women actually outnumber the men! It's total role reversal with women surrounding the dancefloor while men take them on the floor. Making out is very common. Brazilian men are incredibly aggressive so you'll need to match that style otherwise you won't get very far with the women in clubs.

2) Safety really depends on your expectations. I find it slightly less safe than comparable South American destinations such as Buenos Aires. Hard to say if things will be different during the world cup given how many tourists will be in the area. Definitely stick to groups and don't whip out your cell phone on the streets. Believe it or not you'll be at risk of someone snatching it right out of your hands (I've witnessed this myself).

3) Exchange rate is about 2:1. However, exchange rates mean nothing if you don't compare pricing. In the major cities such as Sao Paulo and Rio, it aint cheap. You may even find Sao Paulo to be more expensive than what you're used to. In fact, I found Brazil to be one of the priciest destinations I've visited in Latin America. It is nowhere near as cheap as Argentina / Colombia / Peru. I can't speak to the town you're staying in, but expect prices to be high in tourist destinations. $100 won't get you very far at all.

Brazil would be a blast for the World Cup. That said, I'm holding out for FIFA Euro 2016. France? Bordeaux, Lens, Lille, Lyon, Marseille, Nice, Paris, St-Etienne and Toulouse? Yep.

Honestly haven't put much thought into the Euros, that would be blast as well. Well I guess I can start saving now for that one! I wouldn't mind catching a Champions League final one of these times... especially when Barcelona makes it again.

If you aren't from Spain or don't have Spanish lineage, I'm seriously questioning your choice of team to root for :-p

FIFA Euro 2016.

Haha, what is the "FIFA" Euro 2016?

Agree with other part though, hate Barca/RM fan boys. Munich >>>>> Barca

I had been planning to go this year, but career changes / life / debt have made the dream disappear. Really, no better place for the World Cup than Brazil.

coughWill never stop rooting for Portugal as the poor little underdog who can taste the scent of victory but never quite makes it there. Hate on me all you want.

@"D M" solely because of the "tiki taka" style of play. In my opinion that's the game at its finest, but barca with the new coach and teams adapting to that style are kind of getting away from it, we are by no means in our best form at the moment though! I see your joking but I must let it be known I have my reasons!

@"chicandtoughness" and Portugal as an underdog?? Do you think they're an underdog in the group their in? I am sure the US is the biggest underdog in that group. As F'd up as FIFA rankings are Portugal is ranked 4th! with Germany as 2nd.
