Breadth vs. Depth of Experiences
Hi Monkeys,
There's undoubtedly a trade-off between the depth and breadth of professional and personal experiences. A person can pursue incredible breadth, but not have the depth to develop the expertise required to provide unique value (Ex: kid who screws up school work because he's trying to do too many clubs). On the other hand, individuals can be so myopic, so narrow minded, that they develop a very narrow skill set and fail to pivot or see the broader picture (ex: 4.0 GPA anti-social, no clubs).
I've noticed in myself a trend to spread myself very thin, in the hope of pulling insights from various disciplines. I'm fearful of experiences that close me off to a broad array of "exit ops" because I hope to take in as broad a scope of life as possible. I've started to think that it would be very useful to have some type of test to see if more breadth or depth would be beneficial.
Question: what criteria do you use to determine whether to put incremental effort into existing projects or to start something new? I'm asking for Bschool activitities, but also life in general. What implications do you think this has on your career and the person that you are?
Inch deep and a mile wide vs a mile deep and inch wide.
