Breaking in with boutique experience!

I am a junior non-target (high GPA, high SAT) looking to apply for BB and MM SA positions. I have some non-profit work experience and am doing an IB internship this fall at a boutique shop, which should expose me to some actual deals. Is this a sufficient background to land an IB SA spot for this summer? I'm wondering thus because I applied last summer and was unsuccessful (but that was before my IB internship).

Thanks

Yes, that is sufficient work experience. Especially if you get some modeling experience at the boutique. However, you are still going to be at a disadvantage being at a non-target. Just network the best you can and make sure to nail any interview you can get.

Thanks for the comment. I am very excited, because the boutique said that I will get to learn some modeling! I am going to be cold emailing/calliing and just using online resume drops. Do the resume drops offer non-targets a 1/1,000,000 chance (mild exaggeration) of actually landing an interview? Are these even worth the time it takes to apply, or do I actually have a shot (at BB SA spots) given my prior boutique IB internship?

Congrats on the great internship experience.

If I were you I would apply any place that I could. BB, MM, elite Boutique, PE funds, wherever.

I would scour linkedin for alumni of your school if there are any out there. Even further, I would contact anyone who is from a non-target also. As an example, if you attend South Dakota State (just an example) and you find some one from a non-target Liberal Arts school at JPM than I would contact him/her. Think of having an entire non-target network. Some people won't respond to you, but some will be willing to help you out.

Honestly, you don't have much of a shot at the BB banks with or without networking, but there are people who make it in each year.

Its not going to hurt you to apply to any place that you can.

Good Luck.
