Breaking into Banking in Miami/Tampa, FL as a German
Hey there folks, it would really help me out to hear your honest opinion as I can't wrap my head around it and it truly matters for my future. My situation:
- fallen in love with American girl (dating for almost 3y now, committed)
- she will study and work in Miami, FL
- we would like to build a future together in FL
- will marry, but not for now, in 3-4 years
My CV:
- languages: native in Russian+German, fluent in English, good in Spanish (studying hard!)
- B.Sc. Economics, specialized in Finance/Econometrics
- currently studying M.Sc. Economics, good German university, program completely in English
- studied abroad at Russia's best Business School (Financial Economics)
- Leadership capabilities (led biggest campus finance association, volunteered at Olympics)
- 5 months full-time intern Quant. Risk Management at HQ of biggest Russian Bank in Moscow
- 6 months full-time intern at Equities/Derivatives S&T at top1-IB (starts with G, ends with S) in Frankfurt
How likely is it for me to land a summer analyst / intern position in FL? I want to work from there to get a full-time offer! I don't really care if its a top-tier IB or not. Also don't care about working hours or conditions. Just want to break into banking (S&T / IB / PWM / ECM / DCM / "anything") and reserve my future in FL, USA (which is difficult enough for non-US citizens)
Thank you for every advice! Really appreciate it!
Al the best from Frankfurt.
Hey,
I raised in Miami and still live here and I think I can provide a bit of inside. I don't know to much about the IB scene here but I am pretty sure Raymond James is up in Tampa. It seems that you have an outstanding resume so securing a PWM position shouldnt be hard for you. There are plenty of those positions here, and that bank that you worked for in Germany has one office here and it's strictly for that. PWM is a good game to be in right now here in Miami because all of the money that's coming in from LatAm. If you're Spanish is as good as you say it is then you should be fine, Portuguese would be a big plus. I'm pretty familiar with PWM as I have some family who work in it for some reputable banks. Good choice of wanting to live in Florida btw, it doesn't have some of the banking opportunities as other parts of the U.S., but the lifestyle here will make well worth it.
Best of luck!!
The immediate problem I see is with your Visa situation.
How will you find a H1B to work in the USA?
Also - please learn about the 30/60 day rule - you'll be doing yourself a huge favor if you know about this. Might come back to haunt you if you don't.
My final advice is do some proper research on US Immigration. Research =/= listening to people's opinions, but finding out facts.
