Breaking into Consulting after Undergrad

Hi everyone,

I am a sophomore at top 15 university interested in consulting. However, whenever BCG, McKinsey, or Bain comes to campus over 300 students go to the information session when each company is only looking to hire 3-5 interns from my university. Based on these numbers, you might see my problem.

How would you all suggest I go about securing one of these limited spots? How do I stand out in consulting?

I am already in the business fraternity which helps with some networking but even in the organization half the students also want to go into consulting.

Thank in advance for the help. All suggestions are welcomed.

I don't work for an MBB, so I'll caveat my answer with that.

Assuming you have the qualifications an MBB is looking for, I do think networking is your best shot. Since a large number of your fraternity is trying to network in, maybe try an untraditional route through connections of a different route (school, high school, other orgs, just reaching out, etc.).

Also, I wouldn't get super down on yourself if you don't end up getting an internship with them. From what I've seen, tons of applicants with relevant consulting internship experiences have success with interviewing with MBB for full-time.

You should try and become good friends with the juniors and seniors in your business frat. Some of them will end up at MBB, and by the time you apply for a full-time role, they will be first and second years at their MBBs. Being friends with a second year BA/AC will likely help you out more than any other professional relationship you can build through traditional networking.

Outside of that, get an internship at a recognizable company, maintain a high GPA (take GPA boosting classes if needed), and get some leadership position this year. If you can do this, you'll likely get interviews at some MBB/Tier 2 firms for a junior year summer internship. If you're dedicated and learn to case really well, you'll beat out the other 300 students.
