Breaking into "Public Policy" Financial Institutions
Hi,
Can anyone share with me/us their experience(s) of joining a public financial institution like the Treasury, Federal Reserve, IMF, OECD, etc? What kind of education do they require? Is networking very important? How did you find the work?
I'm curious because I'm extremely interested in the work these public institutions do, but I feel under-qualified. I'm 26 and have been working in corporate finance (FP&A) in non-financial firms (F100) for the four years since I graduated with a B.S from St Joes in Philly, majored in Finance, minored in Accounting. I'm a CFA Level 2 Candidate as well. I am getting the feeling I would need an MBA to even be considered in one of these organizations.
What was your impression? Thanks!
Curious as well; I've worked for a similar institution, but haven't had much luck breaking in anywhere else despite a couple interviews.

Public Policy/Economic Development Careers? (Originally Posted: 02/13/2013)
Hi all,
I was just curious if anyone knew much about careers in public policy/economic development and what those are like/how to break in? Although I'm pretty sure I'll spend at least the first part of my career in the private sector, I've recently become interested in social policy dealing with poverty/education issues or doing something related to urban economic development (particularly infrastructure issues in developing/emerging countries).
I know it's a long-shot, but I have absolutely no clue how I would transition from the private sector and a finance/accounting-heavy background to roles like this and was wondering if anyone had any information or could redirect me to websites that may be more useful.
Thanks!
Shoot, I picked the wrong forum. Can a mod move this to the "The Other Road" section?
