Breaking into the Buy Side from Sell Side

Hi monkeys,

I was wondering how one breaks in from research to hedge funds. Am I naive to think that the transition might happen naturally due to client contact I'd have on the sell side? Say I keep working with certain hedge funds and perform well, then they'd be inclined to make me an offer? Or do I still have to go out of my way and apply to funds on my own.
