Brief conversation with MD in the elevator, should I reach out for coffee chat?

Long story short, I'm currently working in research as an intern. While I was waiting to meet with an IB Analyst in my bank for a coffee chat, an MD walked into the elevator lobby. The analyst introduced us and we had a super brief conversation about my internship with ER since he also covers my sector.

Should I reach out to him for a coffee chat? Do MDs appreciate students' networking email ...

Def reach out. Managing directors love spending quality time with analysts and chit chatting about career advice and how to become a rain maker.

One follow up question though, how brief was the conversation? Are we talking 30 seconds? Or a few minutes? This could change things

Yeah thanks for the input. He asked if I'm working with XXX analyst, when did i start, joked a bit about his other colleague's suits (who was with him at the time). Shook hands and I said good bye.

So yeah super brief, but I'm debating whether I should email him probably on Tues morning and hopefully he still remembers me by then ...

You could try to get the analyst to introduce you to MD. That might make a smoother connection.

Or you could cold email the MD and mention the encounter in the elevator, just be sure to do a littlle bit of research before so you can ask him some questions beyond the basic (i.e. his career path, deals he’s worked on, how he’s seen the industry change, etc.)

I honestly don’t think MDs are that involved in recruiting. MDs can def help if you’re a student from their alma mater, or your parents are friends bc they have a ton of pull. but when it comes down to it, associates and VPs are the most involved in recruiting.

In other words, tread lightly
