Thanks for the advice. That is what I figured, only wondered if it could be used as a benefit/anti-con in the application process as an explanation for unemployment.
The amount of internal recruiters who reached out to me during my injury was insane, had to manage those with extreme caution at the time.

I don't think you have to worry about anyone thinking that your life altering spinal surgery is a sob story. It absolutely speaks to your resilience and if any applications/interviewers ask about the gap in employment, I wouldn't hesitate to explain the situation at all.
It sounds like you are getting the interviews even though you didn't explain the situation in your application. Are you only get call backs on a fraction of the apps you submit?
