Brown Gibbons Lang - Cleveland
Does anyone know much about BGL in Cleveland? Culture, hours, structure/size of teams, salary/bonus, dealflow?
I know both Compbanker and minihub posted recently about the Chicago office that dealflow isn't very strong right now. Is that true firmwide, or only for the Chicago office?
I work at a no-name bank right now, and am trying to lateral to a better bank. I haven't come across many that are looking to hire laterally, but I might have a chance to lateral to BGL in Cleveland.
I would appreciate it very much if any of you can help me.
Not sure on deal flow, but I've heard that they often do deals that most people would shy away from.
I know two guys who have worked in the Cleveland office, and they both went onto BBs in Chicago, and now at respectable private equity shops. Their reputation in the area is probably similar to KeyBanc and Western Reserve Partners.
Thanks, Walter.
From your two contacts, did you ever hear anything about compensation, hours, lifestyle there?
You're out of your element, Donny.
what do you mean by deals that most people would shy away from? thanks
They were there a few years back - think 2004. I know my one friend said he had a good experience, but like an small MM/boutique, he felt that he could get a much more well rounded experience at a BB.
I can't comment much on lifestyle, or hours. I think comp is below street on the base level....no idea on bonus. I went to UG in the area, and have a bunch of friends at similar banks, and I think generally hours are slightly better than a BB, but it really varies by group and who you're working for. The whole "regional boutiques have less hours" is kind of bs - I have a friend at Key doing 90+ on pitchwork.
It's definitley a great place to get your foot in the door. I think they are somewhat well known in the midwest.
over the line!
Thanks a lot, very helpful.
There is a datapoint from a BGL analyst on the BankersBall survey.
Hours: 71-80 per week Salary: 60,000 Bonus: 15,000; but it said this was paid in December 2008, so that might have been a stub bonus for a first year
This was just one person, so not a big sample size.
Also, no information for culture or dealflow.
Thank you.
Any more data points would be helpful, if any of you know other analysts there.

Does anyone know about reputation, culture, pay for Brown Gibbons Lang & Company for summer analysts?
Do they give any sort of relocation assistance?
Did you get an offer?
In general, I've heard that they work you pretty hard and don't pay out anything close to typical banking bonuses. It's such a small firm that if they aren't closing deals, the principals aren't going to take deeper paycuts to pay bonuses...
still talking. it is for the summer. not too worried about $$$, just worried bout relocating to Cleveland/Chicago for the summer, and finding a way to pay for tuition next semester as i will be giving up my part-time job for the summer (roughly 10k). opportunity cost is a bitch.
pm me.

Did anyone have the super saturday w/ them last weekend and hear back from them yet?
Friend here got an offer from them early this week.
Where does your friend go to school?
Prefer not to specify, but it's a Big 10 in the midwest.
BGL not so great - any thoughts?
What does everyone think of Brown Gibbons Lang? Is it a solid plays to start?
They are really not viewed that great in the market. They do M&A so you will get a good experience in terms of moving to private equity, but they work on some sub-par deals. If considering an offer from them I would check the box some key senior mgmt leaving and how that might affect the experience.
