BSchool Admission with this score
I've read a lot of posts in this forum about becoming a banker. I'd like to get some advice from ibankers at top-tier I-banks(or any for that matter).
Bottom line, I want to take the appropriate steps, which offer me the best chances, to become an ibanker at a Asian/American/European I-bank
I am trying to switch careers (an IT consultant looking to work for an I-bank) by getting an MBA in Europe/US. I am currently working in India for more than 5years.
My GMAT score is 640 .
Besides Cornell and Insead, what are the other "brand" schools that could help me successfully transition careers from non-finance (IT) to investment banking ?
I'm looking at Cornell,Emory,Oxford and Cambridge primarily, and I think I have good chances getting in there. But, I'm not sure if these schools would offer me the same opportunies (or odds) of navigating this career switch as compared to LBS/Insead? I prefer the 1 year format over 2-year, but I understand this could limit the internship opportunity.
Being a career switcher with 5 years of non financial work experience,i have been trying to learn basics about Ibanking and also got offer to join Swiss Finance Academy for Summer-2008 session.
I however am of the opininon that being a career switcher ,MBA with Finance concentration would be the best solution to my needs.
I look forward to any feedback.
Thanks
Ashish
A 640 with 5 year of IT experience puts you squarely in the "Indian IT Pool". Unless you have something else that is stellar, don't bet on getting into all or any of those schools. There are simply too man people with the same background as you applying to those schools every year.
ASHISH MISHRA your post is almost the same as " advice for a former officer....."
Insead is a consulting powerhouse (60 to BCG, 90 to McKinsey, 29 to Bain in 2005 - source: WSJ) but is not as big in banking.
LBS (especially because of its proximity to Canary Wharf, Mayfair, etc) is much tighter with banking employers.
You'll have a hard time getting into either with a 640, though. Both schools are packed have tons of Indian students (note that INSEAD puts a 10% cap on ANY given nationality). Both schools have AVERAGE GMAT scores of 700+. INSEAD usually kicks around at about 710.
Agreed, I think INSEAD is the single largest provider of MBA top-tier consultants.
do not waste your time with swiss finance academy
Which offices of those firms (location) do most INSEAD students end up?
ASHISH,
You flatter me.
You plagiarized my post asking for career-switch advice from another thread!
It's all good.
William
My VERY subjective guess (I read their recruiting stats a long time ago at a campus visit) is ~40% Europe, 20% Asia, 20% USA, 20% everywhere else.
INSEAD has a Singapore campus, a France campus, a pretty significant student/faculty exchange program with Wharton and a small center in Abu Dhabi. Each of those locations (except for Abu Dhabi, which isn't for MBAs) probably feeds primarily to offices in their respective regions.
Sincere thanks to all for their time & insights.
Is it realistic to make it to a target school in US /Europe with my profile, see below. However i am working upon searching & gathering info about schools by myself, may i request all to pour suggestions about the names of the target schools,if any that might be intersted in an engineering undergrad with 640 GMAT & 5 years IT experience(non finance work experience). Please advise.
Thanks Ashish
try and get an IT job at one of the investment banks, try and be friends with all the traders and do your CFA on the side. See if you can get a trading job instead.
Understood ... i appreciate the prompt responses i am getting on the forum .. to add to my previous posts,i am working with ML in IT divison. however my intentions are to pursue my MBA starting 2008 and hence the question about the good/target bschool to apply with this score as asked in my earlier posting... suggestions are welcome..
Thanks Ashish
