Business card question
Hello all, quick question. I am interning in DC this summer and my supervisor took me to a couple of speaker events. He knows a lot of people there and introduced me to a bunch of his colleagues and friends which has been good. Today, one of them gave me his business card. We only spoke for about 2 or 3 minutes, he asked me the generic questions: where do you go to school, what are you studying blah blah. but then he said, "here take my card" and then left. Should I email him? And if you think I should, when should I ? Also, what should I be getting at in the email? I do not want a job from this guy, just maybe learn about his work.
Thanks.
Yes.
... is this your first time receiving a business card?
It's a personal marketing device. At events like this, everyone is interested in making connections. He gave you his card so that, should you ever have need, you can reach out to him. It's not like you should be pressured to send him an email; it's not a protocol that you need to email everyone whose card you receive. But if you're genuinely interested in his line of work then he's basically given you the okay to reach out.
haha basically, yes. Anyway, my supervisor is going away for about 2-3 weeks. He gave me some materials and projects in that time, but most of it is open ended. I kind of want to email and ask if he knows of more events like this I could go to because I will have some free time. Is that okay?
Ya. People like to be helpful, surprisingly enough. It makes them feel important. The dude will like you if you ask an ambitious question like that, he might even hit you up later if they're looking for some entry-level guy or something. You never know what connections are going to come back to help you out, but like someone said before don't feel compelled to like e-mail the guy and say whatup just because he gave you his card. If you have a question relative to him or the time you met him, then it totally makes sense, so go ahead and do it.
And send him a pic below the belt to let him know you're for real
I don't see why it wouldn't be okay.

Wait for longer than after the day you got it, but not longer than a week.

Alright, I will email on Friday morning.
Okay, I emailed the guy who gave me his card and got a response already:
Hi John,
I presume you are living at ____? I'll certainly keep you informed of other events. Let us have coffee in the near future.
Best,
Seems like a good response. How should I respond? He also just me a link to another networking type event happening next week.
