Buy side and PE?

Newbie question. Besides PE, what other fields in finance have "buy-side?" Thanks

I might not be clear on what I wanted to ask, sorry. When people talk about the buy-side, which field in finance are they referring to? I just know that PE is the buy-side (or maybe I'm wrong.)

See what forever did here? Whereas I gave a man a fish, which will feed him for a day, forever taught a man to fish, which will feed him for a lifetime.

That's a metaphor.

What if I told you that I already googled and found some information that I don't really understand and I wanted to ask someone who has exp or knowledge to explain a little more so I could revise my search with more relevent keywords or phrases? That's why I wrote "newbie question." Not knowing how to search precisely has nothing to do with maturity. You do not have to answer this post if it bothers you, but please be polite and don't lauch personal attack. You might as well have experience in which people may think of you as not mature. Each of us has different background and experience in life. You might not have gone through or experienced things that others did; but, does it make you not mature? absolutely not. Maturity is a very strong word, foreverbxr.

Not sure Forever needs to be such a dbag but you should familiarize yourself with Google, Investopedia, dealbreaker, etc.

The buy side involves places that take actual investing positions (ie. hedge funds, mutual/pension/insurance funds, PE etc). Buy side deals in proprietary models ("black boxes"), internal research and the like in an effort to buy and sell securities for a profit.

The sell side helps facilitate transactions by providing advisory services, research, and sales services.

An easy rule of thumb is that "buy side" firms deploy their own (or their LP's) capital, whereas "sell side" firms help them do that (by advising on deals, publishing research, etc).
