Bypassing HR? (FT)
Disclaimer: This is somewhat of a rant.
I know most of the discussions going on now are in regards to SA recruiting but this pertains to FT.
The simple question I'd like to get answered - Is it possible to get brought in without HR approval anymore?
I'm not sure when it stopped, but I know you used to be able to get brought in to interview by a recommendation from a senior level person.
I would say I have established pretty good relationships with VPs and above but it always seems they can't do anything because HR doesn't see a need for the group.
Or if the situation arises when I do know there is a position available it still seems HR is deciding who to bring in.
yes anything is possible but in order to seal the deal on anything you have to get the final sign off from hr.
Also, blaming HR is an easy way to get around not going any further with you, if they don't think you are a strong candidate.
Well I will say I don't have the typical pedigree but that's why I've been trying to establish connections with the people in the actual spots I am interested in.
If you can convince a company executive that you have unique talents and value-adds to him/her then said executive may very well decide to bring you onboard. Even if there is no position readily available. they could create one just for you. Although this is usually more difficult to achieve at analyst/associate level as the recruitment process for the junior positions tends to be much more standardized and handled by HR.
bump for more takes on my situation.

I am in talks with an HR recruiter at one of the banks and she seems interested but doesn't have anything concrete available to discuss with me. There are a couple of positions that I think I am good for but she is telling me that the hiring manager took a pass on my resume. I wonder if the HR person is selling me well enough to the hiring manager and whether I could do a better job. My impression is that this HR person is just phoning it in. So am I committing a serious faux pas by approaching this hiring manager directly? My experience with HR is that they are already sensitive about having the least power in the company. On the other hand, I am showing initiative and motivation by reaching out to the person who I would be working for.
Thoughts?

If they've rejected you already, what have you to lose?!
