CAMELS Analysis

Hey everyone. I had an interview for a credit analyst internship today. It was for an undergrad internship, and the interviewer seemed impressed by me. He stopped me at one point and told me that they had not had any good candidates for a position in the same department that they generally only recruited grad students for. He then asked me to complete a CAMELS Analysis report on a bank over the next couple of days, and he told me that if what I came up with was acceptable then I may qualify to work in the grad student oriented position. I've tried googling examples of CAMELS analysis and stuff, and generally what comes up is well... camels (the animal) Does anyone have any insight on these, or know a place where I can find some examples instead of learn about the differences between the one and two-humped camels?

Thanks in advance!

I wouldn't be as harsh as the poster above, but I would suggest that you try to figure it out on your own and be open to the firm about this process. Leave it to them to figure out whether you are suitable for the job or not. You never learn everything you need for a job in school, so it's perfectly OK (in fact, even necessary in the long run) to learn up on new stuff. However, outsourcing your duties to anonymous online forums is not a sustainable track.

Btw, I just googled it myself, and the entire first and second page of results were all about ratings, not animals, so I don't know what you entered there...

I wasn't asking for someone to just tell me how to do it, I just couldn't find an example of one anywhere. I know that some of the information is out there, but I can't do anything with it without knowing what it's supposed to look like in the end. I told the interviewer that I hadn't really done it in school or on the job and was honest with him, but he said to have a go at it anyway. I think they just don't have anyone to fill the position right now, so I guess he thought if I could at least figure it out on my own then it may be worth it for me to fill the position if they can't find anyone else. Thanks though.

Here are a couple of 2011 case studies. Go to Wikipedia and search for "CAMELS rating system". In note 3 you'll find a link to a CAMEL analysis of Lehman. You can also google "camels analysis bank example" and look for a hit whose URL includes the word theseus, there you will find a CAMEL analysis of an AIG subsidiary.

They may not be perfect examples but hopefully will get you thinking in the right direction.
