Can I bring my own laptop to work?

Guys,

I'm about to start on the desk as a first year. I was wondering if it would be OK for me to bring my own laptop to work so that I can occasionally check emails etc during the day? I will be tethering internet from my phone but would much rather be able to use a full computer to do it.

Is this a big no no or is it totally OK? I would rather not have to buy an $800 iPad just to do this.

..i wouldnt let people know about it.

are you in banking or trading.. cuz it's easier to get away with it in a cube vs. a trading desk

for emails, why not just use your phone? what's the advantage over a computer vs a smartphone when it comes to responding to emails..

------------ I'm making it up as I go along.

I just worked at a BB PWM this summer and they didn't want anyone using laptops because they want to be able to monitor emails, and don't want employees using yahoo/gmail to communicate with each other or clients. Probably the same in other areas of finance.

And for the record I think the Galaxy Pad by samsung, which is a spinoff of the iPad, does have word on it.

Yea. If you have Pages and Numbers (apps) the can edit and open A's well A's save files A's word and excel docs. It works nice

Nice is where it ends. Anything beyond a simple SUMIF and numbers will tell you it isn't possible. Pages also has a lot of problems converting Word files with any layout more sophisticated than left aligned text. Pages and Numbers are nice, but by no means substitutes for the real deal.

Sorry to go off topic like that ;)
