Can I take the Series 7?

Hey guys,

Long story short, I work for a software company as a financial analyst and was wondering if I would be able to take the Series 7? Obviously I need to pass the SIE first, but since I don't work for a securities firm, I'm afraid I won't be able to get sponsored to take it. If anyone knows how I can get around this, I'd be greatly appreciative!

You want to work in private banking? What type of role exactly? If you mean like private wealth management then yeah you'll need it, but private banking is a bit broad.

Short answer is no, right now you aren't in a position to take it since you need sponsorship for it. First things first, just get your SIE and get that out of the way. Then start applying to firms and eventually you should have one bite, they'll sponsor you, you pass the 7 and then you'll need either the 63 and 65 or just the 66. Assuming you're talking about private wealth management still.

Thanks for the reply! I do mean Private Banking - wanting to come on as an analyst working under a banker/client advisor, interested in an investment specialist type role more forward looking before getting to the banker position after a few years. Since I'm off-cycle, my plan is to get SIE and 63 as friends of mine I recently spoke to from JPM PB and GS PWM have them. Also plan on taking L1 next June for long-term aspirations. This post is a little dated so I've had some discussions with people from industry since
