Can life get any worse?
Hey guys. Just wanted to voice out my concern and seek for guidance. I dont know what to call my situation? Desperate? Maybe.
I am from a Non Target in India. Main probelm is that I fooled around in college and didnt know the difference between operations and front office. Therefore I didn't do any kind of networking, or any effort to find a front office job. All I focussed on was finding a job with a big company and landed up with an operations job at a BB.
Things started becoming clear once I joined the firm and I had a clearer picture of what I wanted to do (Like any kid, IB course, stereotype). For almost a year and a half I have been trying to network my name into boutiques here (forget BB. They need an MBA in emerging markets to even qualify for an analyst role here.
2 years in operations now, surely going to hurt future IB chances, innit?? I have applied to possibly every boutique here and havent received a single call. To add insult to injury, I bombed my GMAT at the end of last year (End of chances of a Masters), consigning me to at least another year of misery.
How should I approach things now? I am in a bad situation with operations (Night shifts, graveyard shifts and what not). Seems like the private equity dream will remain a dream.
**** Typo. Network my way..
Are you working in India? or in NY/London
Damn... You are failing a lot. The most badass GS MD would probably love to switch up lives with you.
If people like you get a job in IBD, how can God ever be fair? There are tons of smart kids going to target schools, perfect 4.0 GPA, networked their asses off, did several internships including BB IBD. Even non-target kids on the site did everything they can to land relevant internships. From what you wrote here, you, yourself are to be blamed. I did not see any significant efforts on your end to make changes to your life.
You could be on fire as you're typing this, that would make it worse.
@lekman. Working in India.
@ Human. I know . Cant blame anyone but myself. But has anyone on this forum been in worse situations? What can I do to get out of the muddle?
@happypantsmcgee. You are right mate. Rage is an understatement.
I agree with above posters pointing out that you could be homeless in the street of a third world ....excuse me, developing... country. You could be an illiterate factory worker. You could have your dick cut off. You could be in prison. You could be this guy: http://www.onlineradio.hk/admin/cat_img/Biker-Accident.jpg You need to realize that while dreams are good they're JUST DREAMS: they come and go. Don't take everything and everyone in your life for granted just because it doesn't match up to some creative vision you had. Given the state of the general economy and the massive amounts of layoffs, you could be doing a whole lot worse.
My grandparents tell me about the time they spent in Auschwitz. IT CAN GET A WHOLE LOT WORSE.
You have three priorities: 1. Start working harder at your current job. They may promote you. This will help things. 2. Retake the GMAT. Clear your head, then focus and study....this isn't rocket science. 3. Seriously reconsider your priorities and get over yourself...however it is you have to do that. If one thing is out of reach, realistically look at the other options and acknowledge that the overwhelming majority of people on this earth don't even have those.
That is all.
It could be worse. At least you don't have a Greek passport.
Buddy, you're from India, and you're asking if life can get any worse because you can't get a job in high finance? WTF is wrong with you? Fuck yeah life can get a lot worse. Just look at all the starving children in the slums of your country. You could very easily have been in their position...
OP:

Yeah, but don't they hold open tryouts for Who Wants to Be a Millionaire there? So poverty is pretty easily mitigated, right?
Life can get worse, a lot worse... but look at it this way. The only person holding you back is you. First, change your outlook on life... Second, take the steps needed to progress forward. It takes time, there is no silver bullet here.
Don't give up. Continue networking. You are in a much better position than most people. Consider this, you got a job and a real safety net - that's a huge plus.
In your free time just start googling contacts and networking. You are young, you will eventually get there.
I dont think its a end of the world for you. Every one fails, but what's important is how long you will take to bounce back.
INDIA is a an emerging market, tons of opportunity. Start networking : Make a excel sheet. Fill the name of small and big firms who can offer the role you are interested. Meet them......go to CFA chapter meetings...
You are better than 1/2 of INDIAN population, stop being pussy..
My dude, you gotta stop putting shit on the pedestal. You're asking if life can get any worse because you cant land a job in a particular area of finance?! Ummmm yea, it can get a lot worse. I take it you've missed the ass load of "Peace IB, im outta here!" threads that have been floating through WSO lately. Point is, the grass is always greener. Try to find happiness where u r instead of always saying "if only i could get X, I'd b happy"....cuz i assure you thats not how shit works
wtf is an indian target? stop the bitching and grow a pair
excuse 1: i didnt know college was important so i got bad grades
excuse 2: i bombed GMAT once because i work so many hours in back office? what?
If you're not going to take life by the balls and ace your GMAT after all the shit you supposedly "hate" then why should anyone go out of their way to help you?
horrible attitude.
It's just bullshit. The people that have the crybaby attitude and never look at themselves as the problem are the most frustrating and usually lazy people I have ever met. Look at this guy who is working in IB, not sleeping and absolutely crushed his GMAT: //www.wallstreetoasis.com/blog/how-i-got-a-770-on-the-gmat-with-minimal-e…
Why can't you put in triple the hours he put in and do just as well? Point is, you probably can't because you were lazy in college and you're likely still lazy. unfortunately, I don't think my criticisms will change anything...for people like the OP, the world is against them. The obstacles they face are so much greater than the rest of us.
