Can someone offer me some help?

I'm currently a sophomore at a non-target looking to get into investment banking. I'm in the process of looking for an internship, but can't seem to find anything. However, my aunt recently got married to a banker who said he'll help me in anyway possible. I spoke to him on the phone two weeks ago, and he said he'll speak to former employers by my area to see if they can help me. I have yet to hear from him and I want to ask if I can get an internship with him, without making it seem like I'm using him. What do you guys think I should do?

Thanks !

Ask him if his company hires interns, and if they do what are some qualities and skills they look for in their interns.

This way you'll know if his firm even hires interns, and if you would be a fit. Then if the answers to both of those are good, then I would passively suggest being an intern for his firm.

If you are dead set on IB as a career and cannot break in sophomore year (which is really not a big deal), I would probably consider an accounting oriented internship. They are easier to land and if you're a good people person, having an accounting background with a well rounded personality should do you well for an ib interview or landing a SA position.

I'm actually a sophomore too right now. My school is also pretty much a non-target.

The thing that you absolutely need to do is look up a Merrill Lynch or Morgan Stanley Wealth Management in your area. There are a ton all over the place and a LOT are looking for interns. Spend just a few minutes googling wealth management firms in your area and there is a good chance you will find some place that is looking for interns

Your best bet is probably to just take some time to develop a relationship with him so that he can become a mentor figure for you. Getting a sophomore IB gig is rare and definitely not necessary so I would shoot for something related to finance and wait until junior year to press him for more help in landing IB. He will be more willing to help at that point once you've established a longer term relationship.
