It will mostly depend on how you did in the interview and how close of a relationship you have.

In general a referral gets you in the door and outside of that it is on you. So if you bombed the interview you probably won’t get a next round.

The exception to this is if you know the MD well and they are willing to fight for you. This can happen if they know you well (or were referred to by someone they trust) as they can excuse away a poor performance with positive reviews by others (or if they have a positive view). Or they owe someone a favor (much less common nowadays)

Outside of that, they won’t usually fight the interview process. It just isn’t worth it, if the interviewers come back and say you were terrible why would an MD fight for this? At the end of the day they need good analysts and if they barely know you, a short networking conversation won’t be enough for them to fight for you.

If hirevue probably a bit more likely to get a pass. Again, it’ll depends how badly you bombed and whether the MD cares enough to fight for you if the feedback is negative. He/she is more likely to try and get you a pass if the info comes from trusted sources as a hirevue isn’t always a great read.

Not much is gained speculating here though, you’ll find out soon enough. It is possible, but only the MD will know whether or not they want to fight this.

FWIW, had a BAML hire vue for their sophomore program and got accelerated to their super day after a VP put in a word for me I believe. Ended up not getting an offer but take that as you will

Was this last year? Reason I'm asking is currently going through BAML soph recruiting right now and haven't gotten HV. If it was last year, do you mind shedding more light on the timeline/process (how many people at your super)?

This was last year in October, specifically for their S&T program (didn’t get anything for IB/Capital Markets). If I’m remembering correctly I submitted the hirevue around September. Around 4 people in the office I saw at my super day during my specific time slot (2 people I knew) but I’m sure there were more people for the entire day
