Candlestick vs. quantitative trading

I used to be a trader, more of the candlestick variety before I studied finance and I learned about candlesticks before. But now since I've seen a lot more quantitative concepts, I'm just wondering: who reputable actually uses candlestick charts? Are they useful for anything? Is there a quantitative way to use them, or is candlestick trading just junk science sold to retail investors and chop shop guys? Do any reputable firms (not pay-to-play) use candlesticks?
