Capital IQ for West Coast S&T
Does anyone have Capital IQ regarding trading firms in California? I'm looking for primarily private companies. Assistance is much appreciated as I am seeking 2011 FT employment starting in August or later in January 2012.
Are you in love with the idea of trading or are you trying to work out west in finance in general. If so, I would recommend ER in Biotech, VC type stuff, Black Rock, Clarium Capital, or Barclays. I really don't think that there is much trading outside of New York (and surrounding environs - ie Connecticut, Pennsylvania) and Chicago.
Although I could be wrong.

Thanks for the prompt reply..I'm in love with trading..asked about West Coast because a friend of mine just had an interview with a power trading group..so curious what else is out there..very aware of the trading out in Chicago/NYC/Connecticut..looking for equities/commodities but open to other ideas.
If you want to do energy trading don't go to California - what you really want is Houston. I don't suspect that trading in California would be that great due in large part to their weird laws and complete lack of production facilities there (unless I'm crazy but I thought they were a net importer by a large margin).
Agreed. I'm from Houston so I've lived around the nat gas/crude/power commodities play my whole life..but I've applied to various firms in Houston including Vitol & Glencore..but San Fran would be nice..trading is a first priority for me..vc/pe might be a speculative play in about 5 years...
I think there are trading opportunities in California, SF area. I just remember reading that there are s few firms out there with small operations. There could also be utilities with trading operations (wasn't Enron's West Coast trading operation in Portland?).
I think the odds of getting a job in this market are slim for finance in general. If you restrict your geographic location it's going to be tough. Best of luck.
Madison Tyler. They're a legit prop shop in Santa Monica, pay really well. Decently hard interviews.
I know for a fact that a majority of the BB's and the MM's have at minimum sales offices out in SF/LA. Many times you will have a sprinkling of traders as well. I know that we have Equity Sales, MBS/ABS Sales, Distressed/HY Sales etc. in small numbers in regional offices. Someone has to cover the PIMCOs/Ares/Oaktrees of the world
Madison Tyler, like already mentioned.
