Capital Markets vs Acquistion vs Debt Equity Placement

Hello,

I have been following this forum for a year or so now. I have an internship at a small Private equity shop in Florida. As I am starting to network and look for jobs I am just confusing myself. I am trying to figure out where to put myself and just have a couple questions. 1.) is capital markets and debt/equity placement the same? if not, what are the differences? 2.) I assume the only companies that will be hiring acquisition analyst are REPE firms and not big firms such as CBRE, HFF and JLL. I love the acquisition side of real estate and enjoy the underwriting aspect as well. Any insight would be very helpful as I have multiple informative meetings in NYC soon and would not like to sound like an idiot.

1.) Yes, Debt and Equity placement refers to work in Capital markets. Capital markets refers to the ability to find or raise funds for investment. So this can apply to brokerage firms placing debt and equity or REPE firms finding equity investors to participate in investments (this group can be referred to as the investor relations team, can be one person or multiple people at a firm).

2.) No, REITs also hire acquisition analysts, but some on here will say REITs pfall into the category of REPE with the exception that funds can be raised publicly. None of those firms listed have acquisition analysts since they are brokerage firms and other property services. CBRE however, does have an REPE group known as CBRE Global Investors where they buy into investments but their team is very small relative to the size of the company.

It seems like you have a good idea on the industry considering that it sounds like you are still in school or having just graduated. I wouldn't worry too much about sounding stupid when asking questions, they show you're interested.

This forum is really good at answering lots of different questions, it can take time to find them or understand what is being explained, but it is highly valuable and taught myself quite a bit.
