Career Advice

Hi guys,

I'm a current undergraduate attending University of California, Berkeley. I've recently ended my freshman year, and I'm applying for the Haas School of Business early next semester. I need some advice on career and steps I should take to achieve that goal. Any help is appreciated!

What are "Target" schools, and how do they affect my chances of obtaining an IBanking job straight out of college?

What does BB mean? What kind of GPA do I maintain to optimize chances of being called back for an interview.

In Berkeley, there are 2 major business fraternities, both offering networking connections and professional exposure (AKP and DSP). Have any of you guys benefited from a fraternity, and would it help me?

Lastly, and most importantly,
I just completed my Freshman year, and I'm trying to score a summer internship (a bit late, but I'm currently being interviewed). I also got accepted into this program called Swiss Finance Academy. I've done a bit of digging, and I found that many people didn't think it was worth the money. However, from my point of view, I have no real-world business experience at all. Would Swiss Finance be a good starter? What would be the alternative? Frankly, when I'm applying for internships in my freshman summer, I feel that all the positions available for freshmen entitle general "bitch-work." I have to choose between an internship that offers no real responsibility or choose SFA, which offers knowledge at a high price...

I know that later on, internships definitely trump SFA, but seeing as the internships a freshman is forced to consider... what should I do?

This is my first post, and I realize all of you guys have infinite more experience than me, so I'll weigh everyone's words respectively, and please do define any acronyms you may use, b/c the only ones I know are lol and rofl.

peace,
yari

High GPA, good extracurriculars will help.

targets are schools that IB recruiters go to to search for candidates. You do have a better chance because they come to you, as opposed to you going to them. This is not to say that you can't get in to IB if your not from a target.

look on the right side of the screen, scroll down till you see you box titled FAQs...after you do this, you will know more then just lol and rofl.

Not sure about the frats...but any type of networking is good. see if you can search your schools alumni records and look through resumes...see which frat's name appears more often...and go with that lol. Then you can start bothering those alumni and you will have something in common with them and they will hopefully help you out.

Definitly read up about IB...b/c you'll learn that the first couple years in IB are "bitch work"...they call it the "dues", everyone has to go through it. and although "bitch work" isn't the most interesting, you will learn humility and gain experience's from the company in which you work and people you work with/for. Also your still young...so dont expect to get earth shattering tasks at your first internship.

as a freshman, take what you can get, solely for experience and who knows maybe you'll come across some contacts that will be vital to you in the future or maybe you will realize something about your future career path that you didnt know before.

oh...and have a lil fun during the process.
