Career advice needed: Principal investing dept not closing any deals
Hi guys,
I joined a principal investing department in a NBFI a year back with a focus on private deals (debt/mezzanine/equity).
Previously did two years of m&a experience in a mid market firm.
Since joining, I have done a number of models and investment memos as well as general research for the investment opportunities sourced by the partners but none of the deals got passed the investment committee.
Main reason is because deals are still frothy in the markets and unlike a PE fund, there is no pressure to deploy the fund. I am not hopeful of any deal closing in the coming year ahead.
While I enjoy the front seat view to investment deals in the market, I am beginning to think that not having any deal records is gonna hurt my resume. On the other hand, I am reluctant to leave the job after a year as it might hurt my resume by fostering an image that I am a job hopper.
What do you guys think if you were in my shoes?
Thanks!
