Career change from M&A Tax

Hey guys - does anyone have experience in switching career from a Big 4 M&A Tax group? I have been in tax for over 3 years now and have done many deals. That got me more interested in the finance side of things. I recently thinking of switching career into investment banking, private equity, equity research or valuation. Anyone has any insight on the switch? Will my skills be applicable in these fields?

Would be quite difficult to move to IB or PE IMO because you are handling a very small segment of the transaction work. I would suggest trying to move to TAS first and broadening your due diligence and analytical skills with regard to financial metrics. Equity research will have barely any transferable skills, so unless you are covering tax inversions, I cannot see where you can immediately contribute.

Hey Tony - thanks for your comments.

I was having the same concerns too. I am trying to get into valuations to have more experience in financial modelling. Do you think valuation will be a better approach for the eventual switch to IB/PE/equity research?

Step in the right direction, but valuation is incredibly academic and not deal oriented. For that reason, I stick to transaction advisory as the best bet for an internal lateral move. I've seen TAS people move into IB (internally to corp fin and externally to MM IB) and even PE in select situations.

Yeah I tried to move internally but there is politics that wont allow me. Any insight that i can present myself to be more attractive to TAS or Valuations? I do many restructuring and global spinoffs. I am going to do my CFA when i m in TAS or Valuations. Any insights will be appreciated!
