Career Field Change? Is it ever too early?
Hi all,
As someone who has worked the past two years (after college) in the accounting field I was wondering how difficult is a switch into the world of finance, and where's a good place to start? I.e: what are some good starting points? I have been working in "tax" for a little over a year and have passed my first section of the CPA exam. However I cannot help but feel that the route I'm heading down isn't really of interest to me. I'm also enrolling into business school in the fall for my MBA in finance.
I trade as a hobby and constantly read and self teach myself more and more on the topics of economics and finance. It truly is something that genuinely interests me. Finance and economics certainly are a couple of my passions. Please let me know if any one here has ever made a career switch such as this and if so what's a good starting point, is there anything else I should be doing in my down time to get more experience as I search for an entry point?
Thanks,
GG
Well MBA is the obvious option. Also, many accounting firms have more financial services type of roles. Why not speak to HR and ask them if it is feasible to make a switch? Even if they say no, you're still off to get your MBA.
In terms of downtime, NETWORK with other people in your company (would be great if you can get time with a partner in the field you're looking / interested in for an informational interview - if not others will do. The lower in rank you go, the less pull they have on being able to transition you, but it's still not bad to meet staff) and also keep up on the markets.
