Career in Public Equities and Future

I am very passionate about investing in public equities and I wanted to start my career is an asset management firm as a research analyst or equivalent for equities. However, as I do more research, it looks like the industry is shrinking as people are becoming more passive. Is it a bad idea to start a career in equities? Should I look into other asset classes/industries and let go of equities/AM?
