Career Path: How to Break into Asset Management Investment/Product Role?
I am a recent business and finance graduate currently working in a back office role (focusing on internal controls) in a global asset management firm. A few months in and I found that this is not what I am interested in. I am planning to make a transition into an investment/portfolio management/product specialist role and I have passed CFA Level 2 and some modules of CPA. Although internal transfer is possible in the firm, I would assume it is hard for me at least for now as I am just few months in the job. I am desperate and worried that I will end up be trapped in similar position in the long term. What is the best way to make the transition?
I have considered these alternatives. Which of the following looks most feasible?
1. Network, network and network internally
2. Get a Master of Computer Science and jump into a more quantitative role
3. Get an MBA a few years later and make the transition afterwards
4. Actively apply for any role in other financial services firms that uses my investment/research/accounting expertise
5. Stay in the current job for a few years and make the transition
Any other thoughts are very much appreciate! Thank you!
