Case practice

Case practice

Hi!

I see that most experts suggest the candidate to do 30 cases with consultants! From Preplounge website, the cheapest consultant would cost 149$/session!

How many expert sessions do I actually need?

Is there any cheaper path to pass the interviews?

My personal take is expert sessions speed up the progress by highlighting aspects of the case interview to aim for and can also help with the creative thinking aspect, but I'd say it's best to start off with some free resources to get to an intermediate level.

Some GREAT resources include:

  • Craftingcases 7-day free crash course - They also have some great articles on exercises and methods to improve in specific aspects of the case interview.
  • PrepLounge Mock-Interviews - this lets you view the interview process from the interviewer's standpoint; sometimes it's easier to find areas of improvement from the outside looking in. I always thought summarizing case facts was a waste of time until I gave mock cases.
  • Business School case books - business schools have DENSE case books with 15-20 cases spanning 100-200 slides that are readily available online; they give you more cases to practice then you'll ever need. My personal favourites are Darden for beginner cases, Wharton for a  mixed bag and Kellogg for the most interviewer-friendly cases.
  • Various videos online: MConsulting Prep, Victor Cheng's Case Interview Tips Video Series, RocketBlocks case delivery series are all great.

The most prominent paid resource that parallels expert guidance is Looking Over My Shoulder, an audio series where Victor Cheng breaks down live case interviews highlighting great, good, and bad case executions. I learned A LOT from LOMS after I was 5-10 cases in and realized how difficult casing actually is.

I also would advise if you have alumni or friends in the industry, every 5-10 cases, practice a mock case with them to gauge your progress and work on more pointed feedback.

I understand that this may not directly answer your question, but I hope it helps.

Preplounge can be hit or miss when looking for partners — most people are beginners , which may be helpful to mock with when starting out , but can be less helpful as time progresses.

Piggybacking off of this, does anyone have reccomendations for particular coaches on prep lounge and/or experience with myconsultingoffer? People seem to talk about myconsultingoffer on fishbowl a decent amount

I did zero cases with current consultants (except my interview buddy) and didn't pay for any coaches. Still got into MBB, post-MBA level with no business background (advanced degree).

I practiced once with someone who had just gotten into Bain (hadn't started yet) and did the free CraftingCases course. Those were the two completely free difference makers that helped me go from okay/mediocre to getting no weak points in both interview rounds, based on my interviewers' feedback.

Personally, the following weren't helpful: Case in Point, LOMS, Victor Cheng's book, preplounge resources/Q&A (never used coaches), RocketBlocks (used the free trial, found it really useless tbh), and all the regurgitated "lessons" floating around sites like igotanoffer, myconsultingoffer, etc. You could try them out, but CraftingCases was so far above the rest in the quality of their resources tbh.
