CFA and Series 86/87 at the same time
Hi all,
Was wondering if it's IMPOSSIBLE to study for your CFA while studying for your 86/87. I should be moved into research come January 2014 and will inevitably need my 86/87. Having said that, I want to take the Level 1 CFA exam in June of 2014. If I start preparing for the CFA in October of 2013, would that give me enough time/capacity to take care of all 3 exams by June 2014? Thanks everyone.
At the earliest you shouldn't need to start studying for L1 until February or March. Unlike most of the Series exams, the 86/87 can be fairly challenging.
Agreed. Would be difficult to retain such a broad knowledge base for an extended period of time. Late February should be a decent starting point assuming you are able and willing to log the necessary hours. My advice for L1 (even though it feels like an eternity ago) is as follows:
1) Use a study provider (i.e. Schweser). Read the material 2-3x and do all questions in the book as you go along. 2) Take notes during your first pass and begin to develop formula note cards 3) Use the Schweser Q-bank for practice 4) Take at least 4-6 mock exams 5) Avoid reading the actual CFAI text if you can as it is unnecessarily dense and verbose
You can pass the 86/87 after a week or two of studying after work. 86 is more of a pain than 87 (due to the volume of material, and the bizarre 'analysis' required). But 87 is arguably the one you should be more wary of: the questions don't sync up all that well to the STC material.
So if I were to study/take the 86/87 between January/February, I would have ample time to prepare for the CFA lvl 1 taking place in June? If so, that's awesome!
Level I's absurdly easy.
