Chances at NYU, Columbia, Yale, UT?
Hello everyone,
I'm thinking about the business schools above for an MBA, with a particular interest in the intersection of finance/impact investment. What do you think my chances are given my profile:
Professional Experience:
1 year of experience at a regional public policy think tank (some of my research was published by major national news media)
2 years of experience at a lower MM private equity firm (focus on structured financial products and Real Estate PE)
1 year of experience at a top-tier bank (Real Estate PE)
2 years of experience in small business entrepreneurship / economic development with the Peace Corps
Education:
Non-target, 3.3 GPA
GMAT:
710
Thanks.
Hi I211KML,
While your experience is really strong and could win the day, I'm concerned your academic stats will hold you back and could lead to rejection at NYU, Columbia, Yale. You have a competitive profile for UT.
My suggestion is to either retake the GMAT and raise your score, or:
You would be more competitive at the programs in #2 than the ones you listed (with the exception of UT) and they have strength in your area of interest.
Basically I'm recommending that you apply to all the schools you mentioned, but hedge your bets a bit because 3/4 are going to be a bit of stretch. Not impossible given your experience, but definitely not schools you can count on for acceptances.

Linda knows better than me, but I feel like you'd be competitive or on the low end of competitive for the schools you listed.
Maybe a little weaker at Colombia with the low GMAT, but with PE experience and Peace Corp esque experience I think you'd be a decent fit for the others with a good application and good recs.
if you can get the GMAT to 730+, you should apply ED to CBS. Stern should be solid with a higher GMAT. UT is a good safety. Yale in play as well.
