Changing your resume after submitting?

Hi there,

I have a small dilemma and I thought you guys might be able to advise. I've been submitting applications to consulting firms over the past few weeks.

Last week I decided, on a whim, to run for vice president of my student union and I got the post. Will I look like a douche if I email the recruiters at the firms I applied to to tell them this? I think it's a pretty good post and might well sway my chances of getting in interview in my favour, but I also think it maybe would make me look like a bit of a dick. What do you think? Maybe I just wait it out and if I don't get an interview I send a letter to the recruiter with an updated resume asking her to reconsider, if I did that, is there any realistic chance they would reconsider?

Also, naturally I've applied to MBB, but also to Monitor and OW. MBB and OW seems ot be covered pretty well here but I haven't found that much on people's opinions on Monitor - anyone care to share some thoughts on them?

Thanks.

I don't think there's downside to sending an updated resume. VP of student union is a decent leadership item. Realistically the resume books have already been distributed and it's unlikely that the new resume gets seen by the right people, but on the chance that it does, it's worth sending. There's no downside unless you go way overboard in your email letting them know why you're sending an updated resume.

You could also call the firms, let them know about the new info, and ask if they recommended sending in an updated resume. No downside there either.

Good luck

Just a college senior's opinion, but you should definitely do this BEFORE they make a decision on the interview. If you do it after not getting an interview and try to persuade them based on the new information, that feels a bit less 'legit' (can't quite explain why I feel that way, maybe it makes you seem desperate? Also, I'm not sure the change is big enough for them to seriously reconsider a decision).

But definitely if you send in an update before the resume drop deadline they should have no problem with that (and I don't see why they wouldn't consider the new one). Its a little more shaky in terms of whether they'll look at the updated resume between the resume drop date and the date they make interview decisions, but they definitely shouldn't have a problem with you sending one in. Every firm I've talked to encourages candidates to put their best foot forward.
