Why? You do not know how to spend/invest your funds?
No, i'm fine on that front, was curious if ppl give to charity and if so, how much. I try for 10%
I used to give 10 percent as well, but am currently doing 8.
10% of what?
Haha, it's hilarious that Ivan has no idea what you mean Jimbo. He's actually confused as to why someone would bother giving when you can just as easily spend/invest it.
Anyway, to answer the original question, I plan on starting with 2.5% of my income and working my way up as I move forward in my career and have more disposable income.
For me, it is hilarious to even discuss any potential charity expenses from personal funds, while HUNDREDS of billions of dollars are being spent annually by the USA on military, including such purposes as setting and maintaining the occupation regimes and actually killing hundreds of thousands of people in Iraq and otehr countries. Give those billions to charity first, then we may talk about personal contributions. Just my point of view, though...
Can someone make sure Bill Gates and Warren Buffett get the memo?
This is one of the most absurd comments I've ever read. I bet if the US military withdrew from Iraq, Ivan would start donating to charity.

As bankers, we are privileged, and it is our responsibility to do our bit, and help others do theirs. 10% is not asking the world, but it will make a hell of a difference to an orphanage, or to a family that has been hit hard to pay medical costs due to circumstances. Once you get into giving 10% (or more), you won't think twice about it. But get into the habit.... Don't make promises that you'll give $xMs when you make MD. Plan it, give it and feel good about it.
I don't know whether its through G-D, or the laws of the universe, but giving charity will only make more money flow to you over the long-run. Yes, we have worked hard for it, but we all know so many that went to the same schools, same degrees, but didnt have the same luck. Lets make the most of it. I promise you that a child, family or individual that you help, will remember you long after any MD.
If anyone is unsure how to go about giving, or who to, just post your question on the board, and people will pitch in with ideas suggestions.
BTW, there's also tax-benefits to be had.
Many banks also match contributions, so you'll be leveraging your money.
Topic grenade... Fire in the hole!
Ivan, If the government is doing a piss-poor job, I think we need to make it our business to help others, to a greater extent.
Missy, aint no fire here. What is your take onthis charity thing?
Got no right to take the stump on this one.
Missy, you scared??? :) Surely you have a personal opinion...
10% of my net
Nope. None I feel I need to share.
Fair enough, Missy.
I'd say donate charity that focuses on the international level.
Donating to charity that focuses on the United States is absurd. There are so many opportunities that if you can't capitalize on one you have no excuse.
There's no way I'm going to help some lazy national SOB before I help some starving kid in a third world country that has absolutely no opportunities to effectuate a change by him/herself.
