I am currently pursuing my mba and would like to break into PE upon graduation. I do not have PE or banking experience so I was wanting to do an "internship" or some work on the side at the very least over the next 1.5 years to gain relevant experience. Does anyone work for a PE firm in charlotte that could use some help or know of any firms that I can contact? I am going to start cold calling but wanted to check here first.

Is Charlotte where you are located or just a big city near-by? My only PE contact in NC is in Asheville, NC. (Which is like a 2 hour drive from Charlotte)
I live in Charlotte.
Thanks for all the replies and info.

Great link. As a side not Wachovia Capital Partners is now Pamlico (they did a spin out). Falfurias isn't on the list but was mentioned above.
Between the link that was posted and the ones that have been listed I think most have been covered. Best of luck.
Regards
What self respecting human being wants to live in Charlotte?????
You are from Canada... See the irony of your comment?
What MBA program is in Charlotte? Does Fuqua, Babcock, or Kenan Flagler have a campus there? I can't think of any other B-schools in NC.
What is your background? As a recent MBA grad I can tell you that breaking into PE without prior banking or investment experience is going to be very tough. Your best bet is to bring some "operational" expertise to the table and sell yourself as someone that can help improve their portfolio companies. On the bright side, firms are typically willing to bring in MBA students as free help so you should be able to find a place that will help you gain experience while in b-school.
Wake Forest isnt too far from Charlotte.
Carousel Capital, Patriarch Partners, Falfurrious (Hugh McColl's fund), Pamlico (sp?) come to mind as local shops. There's probably a handful of others, but I just can't remember their names.
Also, Carlyle has an office down there, but I believe it's mainly the senior FIG guys who previously worked at Wachovia (Jim Burr, etc.)
Plexus Capital, Frontier Capital, Fern Tempelton, Culbro, capital south (might actually be hiring)...there is a few more i cant remeber them.
haha PE in asheville? Do they specialize in taking jam bands public?
lulz...
